Claire Sweeney is set to make her return to Coronation Street as troubled addict Cassie Plummer.

Fan have just a month to wait as the actress, 52, revealed on Lorraine on Wednesday she will be back on TV screens from the 16th August.

Claire left the soap last month as her and mother Evelyn (Dame Maureen Lipman) sought help for Cassie’s sobriety.

But the departure was only temporary and the drama is set to continue with both women returning.

Speaking on Lorraine, the actress confirmed: ‘I’m back on August 16th on screen and I’m back in the thick of filming.’

Claire plays Tyrone Dobbs’ estranged mother Cassie who arrived back on the street to reconnect with her son despite struggling as a drug addict.

Praising her co-stars, she said: ‘Working with the wonderful Alan Halsall (Tyrone Dobbs). He’s so good, and Maureen, and Sally Carman (Abi Franklin) as well, I love it.’

The actress first filled the nation’s homes when she joined Liverpool-based soap Brookside playing the character of Lindsey Hill for a whole decade.

Brookside was axed in 2003, but Claire returned to the soap world in June and earned fans’ seal of approval with her portrayal of Cassie.

Claire admitted she was ‘sworn to secrecy’ after gaining the role.

Claire revealed she had to be ‘careful’ what she told her young son Jaxon in case he announced the news to everyone before she was allowed too.

She said: ‘I got offered Corrie on my birthday this year and I couldn’t tell anyone!

‘So I was sat on the balcony, I was on holiday with my mum and Jaxon and I got the phone call was sworn to secrecy.’

‘And I had all my mates phoning me and I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone! I told my mum of course. I’ve got to be careful what I tell Jaxon though because he’s got a big mouth!’

‘He’s eight and he doesn’t really understand when you have to keep quiet, he’s just announcing it to everyone!’

Cassie’s arrival on the soap last month wasn’t a happy one as she was rushed to hospital after an overdose, before her furious mother Evelyn confronted her.

In the episodes, Evelyn spotted a disheveled Cassie lingering on the street, and later received a call from the hospital where her daughter was taken.

Viewers then learned Evelyn had tried to help her daughter get clean multiple times, including as recently as last Christmas.

The two-handed scene was praised by soap fans, with many keen to see more of Claire’s character, so they can find out whether she and her son Tyrone will reconnect in the future – and it seems the possibility could now be on the table.

Maureen previously starred as Rose during the online pandemic run and some subsequent shows, but said she was excited to portray the character once again.

The hilarious grandmother has been a firm favourite on the soap since she joined with her famous late dog Cerberus in 2018.

Her scenes with Claire were quipped as ‘the best scene [the soap’s] had in months’ by fans who can’t wait to see where the storyline will go next.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
