Netflix has finally released the first full-length trailer for the second series of Heartstopper, showing Nick Nelson struggling with coming out at school.

The first series of the LGBTQ+ coming-of-age drama followed school student Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) as he fell in love with his friend Nick (Kit Connor).

The series, adapted from Alice Oseman’s webcomic, ended with Nick and Charlie officially becoming boyfriends, with Nick coming out to his mother (Olivia Colman).

And the first full-length trailer for series two showed Nick grappling with how to come out to his schoolfriends and asking Charlie why being ‘out is so complicated’.

The trailer, which came out ahead of the show’s August 3 release, also saw Tara Jones (Corinna Brown) struggling in her romance with Darcy Olsson (Kizzy Edgell).

Scenes also showed Elle Argent (Yasmin Finney) and Tao Xu (William Gao) growing closer as their friendship begins to blossom into something more.

The trailer kicked off with sweet scenes of Nick and Charlie spending time together, with Nick taking ‘adorable’ pictures of Charlie while they were also shown hugging and kissing.

Walking with his pals Tao and Isaac Henderson (Tobie Donovan), Charlie excitedly shouted: ‘I have a boyfriend!’

To which Tao replied: ‘Yes, we’re all fully aware.’

The scenes cut to Nick and Charlie spending more on-one-one time together, with the rugby player assuring Charlie that he wants to tell people about their romance.

‘I want to tell people, it’s hard to find the right time,’ he said, with frames then showing him faced with his rugby teammates.

Nick, Charlie and all of their pals were then seen spending time with Nick’s friend Imogen Heaney (Rhea Norwood) as she joins their friendship group.

She asked Nick and Charlie: ‘Your friend group is so nice, how did you meet them?’

Nick then stumbled over his words and appeared unsure how to answer, as he seemed to struggle over telling her about  his and Charlie’s romance.

But Charlie reassured him: ‘I want you to come out, how and when you want to.’

Elle then chatted to her close pals Tara and Darcy about her crush on her best friend Tao.

She said: ‘Tao is the worst person to have a crush on.’

To which Tara asked her: ‘What if you actually tried flirting with him?’

Tao was then seen appearing to confess he also has feelings for Elle for the first time, as their friendship begins to blossom.

He asked: ‘If this doesn’t work out, then I lose my best friend in the world.’

Scenes then showed Tara making a huge declaration to her girlfriend Darcy as she confessed: ‘I love you. That’s not me asking you to say it back or anything.’

But Darcy simply replied with a slight smile: ‘Yeah.’

An upset Tara later told Charlie: ‘I’m jealous of you and Nick in some ways, you actually talk about your feelings.’

Nick was then shown being confronted by Charlie’s bullying ex Ben Hope (Sebastian Croft), who angrily asked him: ‘Does Charlie know you don’t want to come out?’

But Nick insisted: ‘I do want to come out.’

As the group of students headed on a school trip to Paris, Charlie was heard saying of Nick coming out: ‘I can make sure Nick doesn’t go through what I did, I can protect him.’

On the trip, Nick and Charlie faced an amusing hurdle as Charlie discovered he has a visible hickey on his neck, which is sure to prompt questions from their classmates.

Elle was then shown looking longingly at Tao as she confessed: ‘I’ve liked him for so long, sometimes I think he might like me back.’

While Nick poignantly told Elle: ‘You don’t have to understand your feelings completely, you don’t have to figure everything out, you can just feel.’

Scenes then flashed to the group running around Paris and having the time of their lives together, with the trailer coming to an end with Nick and Charlie kissing.

The trailer’s release comes just hours after new stills were unveiled, showing how Ella and Tao’s romance is set to blossom in the upcoming series.

New pictures from the second series show how teenagers Elle (Yasmin Finney) and Tao’s (William Gao) close friendship will finally turn into a relationship.

The stills also give an insight into Isaac’s asexuality storyline as well as Nick and Charlie’s romance.

The first series saw Elle admit to her close friends Tara and Darcy that she had a crush on her best friend Tao, but did not tell him.

And their friendship is set to blossom into something more in the second series of the LGBTQ+ drama, slated for release on Netflix on August 3.

Pictures from the series show the pair sweetly holding hands as they stand in the middle of what appears to be a school hall, with decorations strewn on the floor.

They are joined by their friends Nick, Charlie and Isaac as they all look on in shock at something, with mystery surrounding what the drama is.

In the snap, Isaac is reading Summer Bird Blue, a book which features themes of asexuality – a hint at Isaac’s own storyline after creator Alice Oseman told how the second series would explore Isaac’s asexuality and aromanticism.

Asexuality refers to someone who doesn’t experience sexual attraction to others while an aromantic is a person who experiences little or no romantic attraction.

Other stills from the show also give an insight into how Charlie and Nick’s relationship develops, after they officially became boyfriends during the first series.

The debut series followed Charlie as he developed a crush on his rugby-playing classmate at Truham Grammar School for Boys, Nick, with their friendship blossoming into something more.

They then officially became boyfriends and their relationship appears to still be going strong in season two, as a sweet new picture shows them sharing a kiss.

The new stills come after Netflix released the first teaser trailer for the second season of Heartstopper, showing Nick, Charlie and their pals going to Paris.

The first series adaptation of Alice Oseman’s webcomic was a massive hit last year and has already been commissioned for both a second and third series.

Earlier this month, Netflix bosses released a short teaser trailer for the second series, with the promo airing on screen during Pride in London.

The trailer opens with Charlie gently touching Nick’s hand as they stand together in the sun in Paris.

Animated sparks fly between their fingers as Charlie looks lovingly at Nick before a the Eiffel Tower appears on screen.

The group of friends can then be seen running around the streets, museums and galleries of Paris as they take in the sights as the words ‘show the world what love is made of’ move across the screen.

Charlie is then heard saying: ‘Everything is going to be perfect,’ to which Nick whispers: ‘Yeah…’

After the group of school friends are seen enjoying themselves at a birthday party, the released date of August 3 is shown on screen, when eight episodes will be available to stream.

The official synopsis for the jam-packed new season reads: ‘Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship; Tara and Darcy face unforeseen challenges and Tao and Elle work out if they can ever be more than just friends.

‘With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.’

Author Alice Oseman previously spoke to Radio Times about season two, revealing: ‘This season, Nick wants to come out to the world, but faced with his nasty brother, his mostly absent father, and his laddy mates, soon finds that it’s not as easy as he initially thought.’

Previously, Alice – who is asexual and aromantic herself – revealed that the show would focus on asexuality in season two.

She told Attitude magazine: ‘I am both Ace and Aro. Those words mean little-to-no sexual attraction or little-to-no romantic attraction.

‘Netflix will hate me for spilling but, yes, asexuality will be discussed in a really big way. I’m excited. I hope it will change the world. It’s a complicated thing to understand about yourself. People are asking the wrong questions.’

As well as themes of asexuality being explored, the second series is also set to focus on Charlie’s struggles with an eating disorder.

Joining the cast for the second series are TikTok’s Bel Priestley as Naomi, Ash Self as Felix, as well as Thibault de Montalembert as Stephane.

Leila Khan will join as student Sahar Zahid, Jack Barton as Nick’s older brother David, Bradley Riches as student James McEwan, and Nima Taleghani as teacher Mr Farouk.

Executive producer Patrick Walkers said: ‘Continuing the story of Nick, Charlie and the rest of the Heartstopper gang for Season 2 has been an absolute privilege.

‘Alice Oseman and I have been able to watch the actors evolve their performances in every way, and this season is so emotional because of their amazing work. Get ready!’
