HUGE Sky series ‘is AXED after three seasons and THAT cliffhanger ending – leaving fans devastated’

A huge Sky series has been axed, which is sure to leave fans devastated.

Historical fantasy drama Britannia will not be returning to the small screen, according to Deadline, despite being left on a cliffhanger ending at the end of season three in 2019.

The Walking Dead actor David Morrissey starred as General Aulus, a tyrannical army leader who led the Roman invasion of Britannia.

And the last episode concluded with Cait (Eleanor Worthington Cox) stranded in Rome after being abandoned by her mentor, who is thought to have married General Aulus.

While the epic debuted on Sky Atlantic in 2018, it aired in Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. before being streamed by Epix for subsequent series.

MailOnline has contacted Sky for comment.

All the press and publicity during the weeks before the premiere episode had labelled Jez Butterworth’s project ‘the new Game Of Thrones.’

Britannia began in 43AD, pitching the Druids vs. the Romans when general Aulus Plautius arrived unnoticed because Britain’s tribes and families were all feuding.

At the time, the Daily Mail’s unimpressed TV critic Jim Shelley claimed the folk horror was meant to be ‘the new Game Of Thrones’ but more like Carry On Up The Druids or Merlin Goes To Goa, adding that it was ‘a mad mess’.

He wrote: ‘It was like watching a bunch of Sixth Formers perform a homage to their favourite programme, practically Saturday evening family viewing: Merlin on magic mushrooms, with a few throats being cut and one actress with her kit off.

‘The difference in scope and budget was so glaring that the clunky wooden chariots and thatched huts in some scenes looked like the medieval-themed village in The Apprentice used (disastrously) by Team Graphene for their car advert.

‘The mini Stonehenge was not even big enough to have featured in Spinal Tap and looked as if it had been knocked up on Blue Peter.’
