Hugh recently revealed he and his wife had ‘very different ideas’ about parenting when they first adopted kids.
The actor shares adopted children Oscar, 22, and Ava, 17, with the fellow Aussie, who he wed in 1996.
Speaking to The Radio Times Hugh said: ‘You fall in love with someone and you work out your relationship, it’s great! All of a sudden, we had kids’.
‘The way I was parented, the way she was parented… all of a sudden… whoosh! And it wasn’t just Deb and I, it was somehow our pasts coming together’.

‘We had really different ideas about being a parent. And we never really pre-discussed it.
‘We just assumed: we love each other, we don’t argue, that’s going to be fine!’ the star added.
Hugh and Deborah married just one year after meeting on the set of Australian drama Corelli in 1995.
The actor previously said he knew he was going to spend the rest of his life with his beloved after just two weeks of knowing her.

Hugh also recently said he is working on himself and healing his past wounds thanks to therapy.
The Wolverine star told WHO Magazine that he’s already begun treatment.
‘I just started it recently. It’s helped me a lot… We all need a village,’ he told the publication.
‘You need a friend you can unload everything. [Also] having someone really smart, who’s a little a bit removed from your world can be really helpful.’

Hugh added that he is learning to make peace with his past and communicate better with his loved ones through the sessions.
He said it’s helped him most with, ‘Understanding my past and how it’s informing my thinking unconsciously – getting to really understand some of the patterns that I was unconsciously just repeating.
‘And, most importantly, helping me to be more relational with the people I love in my life, and really understanding and living in their shoes and being clear to be able to see them,’ the star added.
Hugh has had a difficult past and was just eight years old when his mother Grace abandoned her family in Australia and returned to the UK.

He told Australia’s Who magazine in January 2018 that his mother leaving him as a child was ‘traumatic’.
She left Australia and returned to her native England in the late ’70s, leaving her husband, Christopher Jackman, to raise their children alone.
After the couple divorced, Hugh’s sisters, Zoe and Sonya, went to live with Grace in the UK; Hugh and his brothers, Ian and Ralph, stayed in Sydney with their father.
‘It was traumatic,’ Hugh said, recalling his difficult childhood. ‘I thought she was probably going to come back. And then it sort of dragged on and on.’

The Greatest Showman star added that after his mother left the family, he saw her about ‘once a year’.
It wasn’t until he was ’12 or 13′ that it dawned on him his mother would never return.
Fortunately, Hugh and his mother reconciled years later.
He told The Sun newspaper in October 2011: ‘I am 43 now and we have definitely made our peace, which is important.
‘I was always quite connected with my mum. I have a good relationship with her.’
