Justin Long and Kate Bosworth confirmed their engagement on Tuesday’s episode of Justin’s podcast Life is Short with Justin Long.
As it turns out, the Accepted star, 44, planned to propose to the Blue Crush actress, 40, on her birthday in January but that is not what happened.
But first, the couple addressed why they decided to tell their proposal story on the podcast.
‘I think we’re both deciding to share this in this space because we’re probably gonna be asked about it and we thought, “Well, how can we talk about this in a way that makes us feel the best,” and we thought, “Oh, I’d really like to just talk about it with you,”‘ Kate explained.
And Justin chimed in with the reason his carefully planned plan went off the rails into something completely different, but even more lovely.

Bling: It was the dazzling diamond on Kate’s ring finger that truly turned heads as the couple gazed into each other’s eyes on the red carpet on Oscar night
‘I did have a special thing planned around your [Kate’s] birthday and about a month before that, life, like we were talking about, things change, and sometimes they change pretty drastically without any warnings,’ the Jeepers Creepers actor shared.
He continued: ‘It was a moment where it just felt so organic and it felt connected to something very, very deeply, profoundly personal that we were going through, like, a real life change, and so it came out in a very organic way.’
Justin and Kate first sparked romance rumors in the spring of 2021 after meeting on a film project in Arkansas and hitting it off right from the very start.
And Kate piped in to give listeners a little background on the romantic moment.
‘We had just gone through this really hard thing and we had spoken to a therapist and we were trying to move through things at the time and she gave us a really great piece of advice which was: Make sure that you’re pretty consistently asking the other what you need, or asking the other what they need,’ she explained.
She continued: ‘I remember waking up not so many mornings after that therapy session and I looked at Justin and I said…I remember, I smiled at you, and I said, “What do you need?”‘ she said.
‘And he, like, really looked at me and he said, “To spend my life with you.” And I smiled and I said, “Well, yeah, you have that. Oh my gosh, you have that,” and he said, “No, I mean I really want to spend my life with you,”‘ she added.
Justin revealed that the moment was just totally natural and organic and perfect.

‘It was the easiest…the words just came out, like, so naturally,’ he said.
‘I thought it was the most romantic and honest and loving proposal,’ Kate added.

And Justin shared a gushing tribute to his future wife in January when she turned 40.
The Idiocracy star penned a long, heartfelt tribute to Bosworth in the caption of his birthday post to her, which featured numerous photos of the pair looking infatuated.
‘She is 40!’ trumpeted Long. ‘She is also the best part of my day, every day – even when we’re not together.’
Justin went on to describe The Horse Whisperer star as ‘the most beautiful human being [he’s] ever seen’ who ‘makes the best cookies.’
The Zack and Miri Make a Porno star rhapsodized: ‘She is deeply compassionate and can’t hurt anyone, but she can be a rascal. She loves to tease. She has the best softest lips I’ve ever kissed.’
Other highlights of Justin’s post were declaring that Bosworth is ‘going to write such a great inspiring book one day’ and that she’s ‘the most fun to do everything with.’
