Kyle Sandilands breaks down live on air as he reveals he deeply regrets how he treated his father before his death from cancer: ‘I actually enjoyed watching him suffer’
Kyle Sandilands broke down in tears on his KIIS FM radio show on Friday.
The radio host took a call from a listener named Michael who asked if he should invite his absentee father to his wedding.
Kyle, 51, then shared his own story of his estrangement from his dad, who died of cancer in 2016.

‘I took my mum’s side and I tortured my dad for years. When he came back around I made it as difficult as possible for him,’ Kyle admitted.
‘I actually got off on sad he was, and how much he tried to make good. I actually enjoyed watching him suffer because I felt that he needed to suffer like we did.’
Breaking down and choking back tears, Kyle continued: ‘When he got cancer and died I regretted not being more open to him.

‘I regretted it and I thought, what a waste of time that was. Now that he’s gone, we can’t speak, he can’t say anything.’
‘I regret it, and my brother regretted it’ he went on, adding that he had discussed his father with his sibling just three days ago.
‘What a waste of time, and we could have had it with him. You never get over it, you continue to torture yourself and you regret your actions’ an emotional Kyle admitted.
Kyle’s father Peter Sandilands passed away in 2016, following a battle with liver and bowel cancer.

At the time, Kyle told his radio listeners that he and his dad had made amends towards the end.
Trying his best to hold back emotion, he told said: ‘We had a great relationship at the end there.’
‘But it’s the regret of like 10 years in the middle somewhere, where it was a bit forced. He was trying to get us back and I was pretending it was alright but it was just messy.’
The Queensland-born personality said his parents kicked him out of home as a teenager after he threw a wild party, when he was interviewed by Andrew Denton on Enough Rope in 2007.

He explained that his mother and stepfather kicked him out, and when his father also turned him away after he showed up at his place, he lived on the streets ‘for a bit under a year’.
‘They said they looked [for me], um, but they couldn’t have looked too far cause I really was still around the same suburbs that we grew up in,’ he said.
‘I felt that I couldn’t [go home]. They said get out you’re not welcome back here.’

‘I have a great relationship with them now although this cloud still looms, so it’s never been discussed fully. No one’s ever cried. No one’s ever said sorry.’
Kyle’s father, a part-time Brisbane bus driver, refuted Kyle’s claims when speaking to the Daily Telegraph in 2009.
‘He always did have a home but he couldn’t get on with his stepfather and his behaviour at that time went from bad to worse,’ he said.
