‘I don’t even know if I’d be alive’: Lily Allen says she ‘wouldn’t be married’ to David Harbour without sobriety as she discusses alcoholism and ‘reacting’ to body shaming trolls on social media
Lily Allen has admitted that she ‘wouldn’t be married’ to her husband David Harbour if she wasn’t sober.
The singer, 37, discussed her battle with alcoholism and ‘reacting’ to body shaming trolls on social media in a new interview on Thursday.
She reflected on her past four years of sobriety and shockingly confessed that without it, she ‘might not even be alive.’
In the candid discussion, Lily also opened up about her relationship with Instagram, after having recently taken a break, and said she ‘shouldn’t let’ trolls affect her.
Speaking to Glamour Magazine about being sober, she said: ‘Pretty much every aspect of my life has changed as a result of my sobriety. I actually don’t even know if I’d be alive if I’m honest if I hadn’t got sober.’

Lily explained she had ‘quite a complex relationship’ with drugs and alcohol and found filming certain scenes in her new drama, Dreamland difficult as a result.
The series sees her character Mel make a ‘monumentally bad decision’ which the actress explained was ‘very triggering’ for her to film.
She said how being sober had changed her life ‘immeasurably’ and added: ‘I don’t think I’d be married to my husband. I don’t think that my kids would be thriving in the way that they are.’
Elsewhere, Lily discussed her relationship with social media after she addressed some comments from followers who said she was too thin.
The star hit back saying how it was ‘all nonsense’ and how she wished that she didn’t let it affect her.’
‘It’s so destructive and I wish that I didn’t interact with it. But sometimes I’m not very good at not reacting. I’m a reactive person. I wish I wasn’t. I’m hoping I get to the stage where I can just have somebody else do all of that interaction for me,’ she said.
Lily, who has followed in her fathers Keith Allen’s acting footsteps, later admitted that she has ‘complicated feelings’ about the nepo baby debate.
The singer has been open about her strained relationship with her dad, saying in 2021 that they ‘haven’t spoken in a while.’

The pair have had a tumultuous relationship when soon after Lily’s birth, Keith began an affair with a brigadier’s wife who lived near the set of a film he was working on. By 1989, his marriage to her mum Alison had run its course.
In 2018, Lily said Keith had been left fuming when she claimed he’d suffered a ‘cocaine-induced heart attack’ at Glastonbury festival when she was 13 – when really it was acute food poisoning.
Admitting that she was ‘born into an incredibly privileged situation’ she detailed how she accepted opportunities that were ‘afforded’ to her and was grateful.
But added that nothing was ‘ever handed to her’ due to ‘not really having relationships’ with certain family members.
