Sir Rod Stewart was joined by Boy George for a perfomance of his 1976 hit The Killing of Georgie (Part I & II) at his gig in Northampton on Thursday.

The Rocker, 78, described the duet as ‘so special’ with the Culture Club frontman, 62, revealing the track previously resonated with him as a young gay man.

The song tells the story of Rod’s gay friend who was sadly murdered in New York back in the 1970s.

George, who is supporting Sir Rod on his Global Hits tour, told the crowd how his late mother had first introduced him to single in his teens.

Admitting he even hid the record in his sock draw before coming out and told Rod: ‘I actually thought you’d written it about me’.

The track was released on Rod’s  1976 A Night On The Town album  and spent ten weeks in the UK charts reaching No. 2.

Speaking about the song the Maggie May hitmaker told Mojo in 1995: ‘That was a true story about a gay friend of [Stewart’s earlier group]’.

‘He was especially close to me and [Faces’ pianist]. But he was knifed or shot, I can’t remember which. That was a song I wrote totally on my own’.

For the perfomance Sir Rod commanded attention in a sparkly gold suit which he layered over a plunging white shirt.

Meanwhile Boy George showcased his own unique sense of style in a graffiti shirt and camo trousers complete with a quirky hat.

It comes after Rod Stewart fans were left fuming as the star ‘stormed off stage’ during his show on Saturday night.

The icon, was performing to adoring crowds at Home Park stadium in Plymouth as his string of summer shows kicked off.

But the venue’s strict 10.30pm curfew meant he wasn’t able to belt out his final song of the night – leaving him frustrated.

One fan told Plymouth Live: ‘After attending the Rod Stewart concert yesterday evening, he finished his second to last song – the finale being We Are Sailing – to be told it was 10.30pm and he couldn’t continue.

‘With this Rod stormed off the stage and the concert was left without light, only to be told the Lord Mayor had put a stop to it. Hundreds of fans like myself were left in shock.’

Another said: ‘It was a fabulous night, but what an abrupt end. A guy dressed in black came onto the stage and ordered Rod off because of a curfew.

‘Rod, of course, immediately left and the lights came on. No goodbye to fans, no encore. Everyone was stunned at the rude and abrupt ending to what was an amazing concert.

‘For an artist to have his performance cut short so rudely and abruptly at the finale is awful.’

On Twitter other fans who were at the concert also vented their frustration.

One said: ‘What an utter t*** to have @PlymLordMayor and @plymouthcc to abruptly end @rodstewart concert at @homeparkstadium last night just because of a curfew is totally rude and disrespectful.

‘I sincerely hope Sir Rod takes this further and those responsible are dealt with accordingly!’

Another wrote: ‘This will make other big name bands think twice about coming to Plymouth. What an utter embarrassment.’

A representative for Rod has been contacted by MailOnline for comment.

The legendary Maggie May crooner is sharing the stage with Boy George and Culture Club for the first five gigs of his 40-plus show trek that will see him also play Spain and Portugal before heading to North America through the summer months.

More shows will follow starting in November, that’s all part of his plan to make this the ‘last time ’round’ belting out his classic songs on ‘the big rock ‘n’ roll tour.’

But make no mistake, Rod The Mod isn’t retiring from music and performing, as some recent reports might have fans believe, but instead wants to shift to swing music and his Great American Song Book catalog.

By making these two announcements during the promotion of the tour, Stewart also sent a message to some of his eight kids (ranging in age from 59 to 12) who were reportedly trying to get the rocker to slow down and retire so he can ‘focus on his health and his family.’
