Sunrise host Mark Beretta says the show has ‘unravelled’ just days into the new year – after presenter Mylee Hogan offended him with twisted joke about a cricketer dying

New Sunrise presenter Mylee Hogan left host Mark Beretta unimpressed last week after she made an off-colour joke that Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath had died.

And on Wednesday, Beretta took to Instagram with a rather telling post about how the show has fared so far in 2023.

Posting to Instagram on Tuesday, Beretta shared a photo of himself, co-host Edwina Bartholomew and Hogan posing on the set of Sunrise wearing festive 2023-themed glasses.

A second photo showed the trio pulling funny faces and looking slightly worse for wear, with Beretta sporting a sombrero and Bartholomew wearing smudged red lipstick.

‘The new year started well… but soon unravelled. Happy New Year from all our team!’ he wrote.

While Beretta’s caption related to the silly selfie, the term ‘unravelled’ happens to perfectly describe his recent on-air clash with Hogan.

Hogan made the bizarre joke last Wednesday after a report on a TikTok trend where children video their parents’ shocked reactions when they’re falsely told a favourite celebrity has died.

Her co-hosts tried to move on to an interview with former fast bowler McGrath as Hogan blurted out: ‘Glenn McGrath died!’

The comment, which was off-camera but clearly heard, prompted an angry reaction from Beretta and co-host Bartholomew.

‘Don’t even…that’s not funny,’ said Bartholomew as Hogan laughed. Beretta added: ‘I don’t get that at all. It’s so not funny. It’s crazy…’

Stern-faced Bartholomew immediately apologised to viewers, adding: ‘It’s not funny. Sorry.’

The show then went on to interview McGrath – whose wife Jane died in 2008 from breast cancer – about day three of the Second Test against South Africa.

It prompted a furious reaction from some viewers who vowed to boycott the show if Hogan remained onscreen.

‘We will not be watching Sunrise any more if that girl with the black hair is reading the news again,’ one fan of the show posted on Facebook.

‘Please remove that girl from Channel 7 – we will feel sick every time we see her face.

‘She made a comment about Glenn McGrath dying and laughed. Doesn’t she know that Glenn’s first wife Jane died tragically from breast cancer?’

‘It won’t matter if she apologises, in her mind she has done nothing wrong. How immature and insensitive she is.’

Hogan, who has only joined the show as a studio presenter on December 23, has vanished from Sunrise since the incident.

On Tuesday, Bartholomew had taken Hogan’s spot as news presenter host at the end of the desk, with Monique Wright moving into the spot next to Mark Beretta.
