The Last of Us: Ellie has to fight for her life alone against a sadistic preacher

Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) brutally fought for her survival on Sunday night’s episode of The Last of Us episode on HBO after being captured by a preacher who had already started feeding his flock human flesh.

When the episode titled When We Are In Need opened, the preacher David (Scott Shepherd) spoke to one his followers James (Troy Baker, who played Joel in the original video game) about how they were running out of food. 

Meanwhile, Ellie was trying to nurse Joel (Pedro Pascal) back to help, realizing that the wound in his stomach she tried to stitch up at the end of last week’s episode had become infected, causing her to head out into the cold to find food and medicine.

James told him about some deer that were spotted nearby. David told James that he could sense that he and the flock were doubting him.

‘I need to know that you are with me,’ David said in the latest episode of the HBO series, which passed 1 billion viewer hours last week.

James said he was and the two of them set off hunting.

A short distance away, Ellie tended to Joel Miller and hoped that he would wake up after she had stitched up his stab wound.

She realized they needed food and went hunting. She shot a deer but it ran. Ellie ran after it but when she got there David and James were trying to take it.

‘Don’t’ Ellie said. ‘Drop your rifles! Now!’

David and James did as she asked. David offered to trade her medicine if she would split the deer with them. Ellie agreed. David instructed James to go back to their settlement and get the medicine. Ellie ordered David to drag the deer to an open building and built a fire. David said there was a place for her in his group.

‘You are inviting me to your hunger club? Thanks,’ Ellie said.

‘I’m a decent man just trying to take care of the people who rely on me,’ David.

David said he found God after the apocalypse . He told her that he had sent four people out from his flock but that one man, who was a father, didn’t come back because he was murdered by a crazy man traveling with a young girl.

 

‘See, everything happens for a reason,’ David said. ‘James lower the gun.’

‘She’s the one who killed Alex isn’t she?’ said James, who had returned.

David said she didn’t kill anyone and told James to give Ellie the medicine. David and James watched as Ellie ran away with the medicine. She ran back to Joel and filled the syringe with medicine and injected it straight into his wound.

Meanwhile, David and James dragged the deer back to his camp. His followers that were eating dinner just stared at him. He told them the rumor was true that they found the girl that was with the man who killed their friend Alex.

‘When the sun rises, I will lead a group out to pick up his trail,’ David said. ‘We will follow it to wherever they are hiding and we will bring that man to justice.’

‘You should kill him,’ the dead man’s daughter said. ‘You should kill both of them.’

David walked over and smacked the girl in the face knocking her to the ground telling her to show him respect.

The next morning, Ellie injected Joel again with the medicine . She went outside to get the horse water but then saw David, James and the others searching for her. She ran inside and told Joel that there were men coming but she was going to lead them away from him. She gave Joel a knife.

‘If anyone makes it down here you f***ing kill them,’ Ellie said. ‘Joel do not fall asleep.’

Ellie got on the horse and rode away from the house.

‘Hey mother f***ers,’ Ellie yelled, shooting at the men while on horseback.

James shot and killed her horse and Ellie flew and laid on the ground. David picked up Ellie and took her back to the compound. He told two of his men to drag the dead horse back and for others to search the houses to find Joel.

One of the men entered the house where Joel was recovering and went down in the basement. Joel heard him coming and managed to get behind him, stab him and choke him to death.

Ellie woke up in a cell in David’s compound.

‘I started worrying you wouldn’t wake up,’ David said.

‘Why am I in a cage?’ Ellie asked.

‘Because you are a dangerous person,’ David said.

David said he stopped the others from killing her. He said he could help her, but she needed to trust him.

Out in the woods, the other men continued their hunt to find Joel. Joel captured them all and tortured them until they told him where they took Ellie. The man told him where the town was and then Joel killed him and his friend.

Ellie tried to figure out a way out of her cage. David came in and brought her a bowl of food. She then saw an ear on the floor in the next cell… realizing that David’s people have been literally eating dead people.

‘You are going to chop me up into little pieces,’ Ellie said.

‘If you are going to judge me,’ David said.

‘Judge you, you are eating people you sick f***,’ Ellie said.

‘Yes, there are only a few of us that know,’ David said.

David told her that he would have told her sooner or later. David said it was a last resort to save people from starving who put their faith in them.

‘You see a lot, so do I,’ David said. ‘You are a natural leader.’

David told Ellie she had a violent heart but so did he. David told her that he wanted an equal and a friend.

‘What about my friend?’ Ellie said.

David said he could tell the others to stop looking for him.

‘They would follow us,’ David said. ‘Lord knows I could use the help. Think of what we could do together. We would make this place perfect.’

David put his hand inside the bars and then put his hand on top of Ellie’s. She grabbed his hand, bit it, and broke it and tried to grab his keys.

‘You little c***,’ David said.

Joel made his way in the snow to find the compound. He broke inside a building and found Ellie’s backpack and the head horse. Then he saw the bodies of headless humans hanging from the ceiling.

James and David grabbed Ellie from her cell and pulled her on a table to cut her up for food.

‘I’m infected and now so are you,’ Ellie said.

David looked at the bite on his arm. She told them to roll up her sleeve and see her bite.

‘What did you say?’ Ellie said. ‘Everything happens for a reason.’

‘No, this isn’t real,’ David said. ‘She would have turned by now.’

‘That looks pretty f***ing real,’ James said.

Ellie grabbed the butcher’s knife and stabbed James in the neck and ran out of the room. David pulled the knife from James’ neck and went after her. Ellie tossed a burning log which caught the cabin on fire.

‘There’s no way out Ellie,’ David said. ‘I know you are not infected. No one that’s infected fights this hard to stay alive.’

Ellie found a knife as the cabin engulfed in flames. David said he was going to keep her and teach her. Ellie ran up behind him and stabbed him. He knocked her to the ground and got on top of him.

‘I thought you already knew the fighting is the part I like the most,’ David said. ‘Don’t be afraid There’s no fear in love.’

David appeared to unbuckle his pants but Elie manages to grab a knife and repeatedly stab him to death. 

Ellie walked outside covered in blood traumatized when Joel came up behind her and hugged her.

‘It’s okay baby girl,’ Joel said, calling Ellie what he used to call his own daughter years ago, adding, ‘I got you.’

The Last of Us will return next Sunday on HBO.
