Tom Cruise’s latest Mission Impossible sequel falls short of box office hopes as it’s predicted to earn $78M domestically after five-day opening

Tom Cruise‘s latest action film seems to be having trouble fulfilling its mission.

The action star’s Mission Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part One, has not performed as well at the box office as hoped and looks to earn only $78 million domestically after its five day opening, according to Variety

The actor, 61, has had to halt production on Part Two due to the actor’s strike. 

Tom reprised his role as master spy Ethan Hunt for the seventh time in Dead Reckoning.

He re-teamed with Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson for this latest adventure.

The team must track down a dangerous weapon to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. 

Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Cary Elwes and Rob Delaney are the newcomers who have signed on for a share of the action. 

Variety reported the disappointing ticket sales could be the result of Tom’s projects attracting an audience older than the target audience of males aged 13 to mid 30s.

2018’s Mission Impossible: Fallout earned only $60 million in its first three days.  

With a budget of some $290 million Dead Reckoning Part 1 has a long way to go to recuperate costs. 

The movie has received a 96-percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94-percent audience score.

As more word of mouth reviews get out, this could result in a steady stream of movie goers eventually making their way to theaters.

Globally, the action flick has pulled in $82.1 million across 70 international territories through its first three days of release.

Dead Reckoning Part 1 isn’t the only franchise film to fall short of expectations. 

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has made $136,659,865 domestically.

The latest release in the popular series has pulled in another $127,150,765 internationally since it opened May 18, according to Box Office Mojo.

Dial of Destiny is poised to become one of the top ten domestic released of the year, however, the movie has not come close to covering its production costs. 

The fifth film in the franchise starring Harrison Ford as the action seeking archeologist had a budget of $300 million.
