Manchester United signed the defender from Leicester in the summer of 2019 for a fee of around £80 million, which is still the world record transfer fee for a defender.

The 30-year-old enjoyed great success in his first couple of years at Old Trafford and was given the captain’s armband within six months of his arrival in Manchester and became one of Gareth Southgate’s first choice England defenders.

The last couple of seasons have proved more difficult for Maguire in the red of Manchester United and currently finds himself as the fourth choice centre back following the arrivals of World Cup winning duo Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

Maguire, with two years remaining on his contract, could be on his way out of the club in order to find more game time and keep his name in the frame for England selection, and Tottenham could be the team to take him in.

This summer transfer window is likely to be a busy one in north London with a new manager at Tottenham and a need for drastic improvement next season following their eighth place finish in the league.

Many of Spurs’ current centre backs are very close to reaching the end of their current contracts, meaning new boss Ange Postecoglou could well be in the market for someone new to fill the role, and Maguire’s experience, leadership and ability could prove very useful.

Clement Lenglet’s loan from Barcelona at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expires at the end of the month, while Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez both only have a year remaining on their current deal.

This leaves just Cristian Romero and an out of favour Japhet Tanganga as their only first team centre backs with more than a year left on their contract.

Aston Villa have also been rumoured to be interested in Maguire, and have been given odds of 5/2 to sign the defender.

Unai Emery led the Villans to a surprise seventh place finish last season which means Villa Park will host European football for the first time since 2010 next season.

The Spaniard will be in the market to improve the strength and depth of his squad and Maguire could fit the role perfectly with his vast experience of European football and having also previously formed a good partnership with Tyrone Mings in defence with England.

Newcastle are also in the hunt for a host of new players having qualified for next season’s Champions League for the first time since 2003.

Eddie Howe will be looking to build a squad strong enough and deep enough to challenge for trophies across all competitions next season and is likely to be heavily backed in the transfer market to do so.

The Magpies are priced at 6/1 to make a move for the 30-year-old, just ahead of West Ham, who depending on the outcome of their Europa Conference League final, could also be competing in Europe next season.

The Hammers had a disappointing season in the league last time out and will be determined to push themselves back into the top half of the league next time around, and the purchase of Maguire could help lead them up the table.

A move to Serie A has been priced at 12/1, while potential transfers to France, Germany and Spain have been given odds of 16/1, with Brighton (20/1) and a return to newly promoted former club Sheffield Untied (25/1) are slightly further down the list.
