After being married for 30 years, Bill de Blasio and Chirlane McCray have announced that they are separating.
The news came through an interview published on Wednesday, June 5. It’s important to note that they have not filed for divorce and are currently still living together.
In an extensive three-hour interview with The New York Times on Tuesday, the couple openly discussed their desire for a change in their relationship.
“I just want to have fun,” McCray stated before turning to face de Blasio and saying, “It’s not that we haven’t had fun.”
“Thank you, honey,” he expressed gratitude.

When Bill de Blasio and Chirlane McCray realized that their love had faded, they admitted to considering divorce for the past two months.
“’Why aren’t you lovey-dovey anymore?’” McCray stated that he inquired. “You can’t fake it,” she said to The Times.
De Blasio acknowledged that their flame had been lost. “You can feel when things are off,” he said, “and you don’t want to live that way.”

The couple stated that they will not file for divorce and plan to continue living together in their Park Slope townhouse. They have indicated that they will be open to dating other people.
The two seemed excited to start their new, somewhat independent lives, at least when they were joking around.
With a deadpan expression, McCray asked the newspaper to print their phone numbers, while de Blasio stated he felt an image of himself working out would look best.
“Can I put a picture from the gym in there?” de Blasio inquired, adding that he is not a fan of online dating apps.
De Blasio began his political career by winning a seat on the New York City Council in 2001. Later, in 2009, he won a citywide election to become a public advocate. In 2013, he was elected as the Mayor of New York City, defeating Christine Quinn in the Democratic primary. Quinn was attempting to become America’s first openly homos*xual mayor.
After two terms, de Blasio ran for President in 2020 but did not make it to Iowa. Another political return attempt failed last year when he ran for Congress but backed out before the Democratic primary. The public’s reaction to the high-profile breakup was a mix of confusion and disdain.

While de Blasio stated he would not seek online dating, sports podcaster David Roth envisioned his new single-and-ready-to-mingle appearance.
