One deeply disturbing aspect in the case of suspected chemical attacker Abdul Ezedi is the complicity of the Church in Britain’s immigration racket.

The Afghan was granted asylum on his third attempt only after a priest vouched he had converted from Islam to Christianity – punishable by death in his homeland.

So pathetically desperate was a Baptist minister to support Ezedi’s application for sanctuary here, they seem to have overlooked his sex crime convictions.

Troublingly, his case is no one-off. Suicide bomber Emad Al Swealmeen, who blew himself up outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital in 2021, pulled off the same trick.

And gullible vicars across the country are enabling masses of asylum seekers to convert – most, if not all, of them Muslim.

Of course, the Church of England and other denominations will insist this flock is genuine. That it represents a triumph in their efforts to spread the word of the Lord. More likely, however, is that it is cynical opportunism – a way to game a broken system.

Indeed, we reveal today how immigration judges have warned for a decade that asylum seekers are ‘fabricating’ conversions to strengthen bogus claims to stay in the UK.

With Ezedi’s alleged victims consigned to a lifetime of disfigurement, you might think church leaders would be embarrassed by their role in letting terrorists and other dangerous criminals into the country.

Not a bit of it. With self-important defiance, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby says: ‘We simply follow the teaching of the Bible, which is to care for the stranger.’

Don’t blame us, he’s saying. It’s the job of the Home Office and immigration tribunals to vet asylum seekers. While true, this is disingenuous. Clearly, a glowing reference from a priest will be hugely persuasive with whoever makes the decisions.

The truth is, our top clergy are hand-wringing liberals who believe the asylum system is ungodly. That is why they caustically condemn every attempt to stop the boats.

The Church insists it wants to work with government to tackle the industrial-scale deception. If sincere, it should start by refusing to baptise any asylum seeker until their claim to stay here is granted.

Fight for freedom

When Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine almost two years ago exactly, President Zelensky’s forces were not prepared to follow the script.

Instead of Putin’s monstrous military machine achieving total victory within days, as expected, it was driven back thanks to the heroism of Ukraine’s troops and the help of Nato – stirred into action by Boris Johnson.

Today, however, the situation is precarious. As Richard Pendlebury’s powerful frontline despatch explains, a war of attrition has set in. Ukraine’s army is largely volunteer, middle-aged and many have medical conditions.

Despite suffering unimaginable losses, Russia still outnumbers it on the battlefield. Kyiv’s supplies are running low and its brave forces are in danger of being overwhelmed.

While the West vowed to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine, it has been dithering over continued military aid, especially the US. But we must not falter.

Of course, plenty want Ukraine to sue for peace. But even if Russia ended hostilities in return for keeping its territorial gains, do the defeatists think it would satisfy Putin?

The tyrant claims he has no plans to attack Poland or the Baltic states, but he said that about Ukraine just weeks before ordering his troops in. He can’t be trusted.

So America, Britain and the EU must hold their nerve and continue to ship arms to Kyiv. Not just sufficient to prolong the stalemate, but enough to win the war.

This is a fight for freedom. It is democracy versus evil autocracy. If Russia wins, it is not just Ukraine who loses – it is all of us.
