Stewart, who returned to The Daily Show in a once-a-week hosting role earlier this year, slammed Trump and his allies for calling Trump’s tax avoidance scheme a victimless crime.

The fraud case brought by James accuses the Republican frontrunner for president of inflating the value of properties, including his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, to get better terms on loans. The comic was specifically responding to Shark Tank star Kevin O'Leary saying just that and adding that 'every real estate developer everywhere' does what Trump does. 'How is he not this mad about overvaluations in the real world? Because they are not victimless crimes,' Stewart said. 'The attorney general of New York knew that Trump's property values were inflated because when it came time to pay taxes, Trump undervalued the very same properties,' he continued. 'It was all part of a very specific real estate practice known as lying.'

He added that 'the system becomes incentivized for corruption' when you behave as Trump is alleged to have done. Some on social media responded by showing that Stewart himself had seen an overvaluation of his former residence by 829 percent, according to the New York Post. Stewart sold a duplex in Tribeca to financier Parag Pande for $17.5 million in 2014. Though the asking price is not available at the time, the estimated market value at the time was just $1.882 million and the accessor valuation was just under $850,000.

Pande resold the property at a 25 percent loss at over $13 million in 2021. The records also claim that Stewart paid fewer property taxes because he paid them on the assessor's valuation price that didn't break seven figures. It had many conservatives questioning what the difference between what New York Attorney General Letitia James fined Trump of vs. what Stewart did.

Trump himself took notice of the story, posting a complete copy of it to his Truth Social feed without further comment. Stewart reacted to the stories with a sarcastic rant referencing the other accusations laid against Trump posted to his X page. He exclaimed: 'OMG!! I've been caught doing something not remotely similar to Trump!' 'I guess all I need to do now is start a fraud college, steal classified docs, bankrupt casinos, pay hush money, grab [expletive], discriminate in housing, cheat at golf and foment insurrection and you'll revere me!'

Stewart's anger at Trump predates his full entrance into politics, dating back to Stewart's initial run on The Daily Show. Trump launched a nasty tirade against Stewart in 2013, saying the comedian is hiding from his past because he changed his surname from Lebowitz to Stewart.

The scathing Twitter postings came after the Comedy Central host joked that Trump, then a leading voice in the Birther Movement, had a secret of his own and alleged the mogul's real birth name was [expletive]face von Clownstick.

Trump was not amused by the insult and says that Stewart is the one who is actually hiding from his past, since the cable host has long been estranged from his birth father.

Stewart, who took Trump's ranting tweets in stride. 'We seem to have hit a [expletive]face Von Nervestick,' the Twitter account for Stewart's show posted in response before Stewart launched his own personal feed. 'Can't an overrated Jew have a complicated relationship with his dad without being accused of hiding his heritage?' the Daily Show Twitter feed asked in a posting, referencing Stewart's strained relationship with his father.
