A 40km/h school zone in Perth’s south-west has led to police issuing a staggering 401 speeding fines to motorists in one afternoon.

Police ran a camera operation between 2.40pm and 4pm at a crossing managed by two wardens on Stirling Highway near McNeil Street in Peppermint Grove on February 22.

About 1400 vehicles passed through the zone between those times, with 29 per cent of them found to have been speeding.

Police data revealed 281 drivers exceeded the speed limit by 10-19km/h, 26 were 20-29km/h over the limit and two drivers were up to 40km/h over the limit.

“Children are vulnerable pedestrians and 40 km/h school zones are specifically designed to maximise the safety of both the children and traffic wardens,” Commander Mike Bell said.

“The statistics from this deployment were very concerning and my officers will revisit this location in the near future,” he warned.

Can this car turn left in between road crossers?

Bell said it was a busy stretch of road so it was important divers slowed down.

“WA Police Force fully supports the decision by Main Roads WA to reduce the speed limit (during the nominated school times) in this location and recognises the positive impact that will have on the safety of the children and our traffic wardens.”

Police said recruiting traffic wardens in the western suburbs had been difficult, but more people were being encouraged to sign up.
