Filthy state of $700-a-week rental property stuns prospective tenants: ‘Beyond a joke’

  • Renters stunned by state of Sydney rental
  • Penrith property was listed for $700-a-week

A filthy rental property has left prospective tenants stunned as the landlord is accused of ‘taking advantage’ of Sydney‘s deepening housing crisis.

The $700-a-week rental in Penrith, west of the city, appeared not to have been cleaned properly before people were invited to inspect the home this week.

One of the rooms, which had been converted into a home salon, was littered with hair trimmings and clippers, which tenants would have to remove themselves.

The property also featured a shed still full to the brim with the landlord’s belongings, including a rusty lawnmower, a chainsaw and various bottles of chemicals.

An unimpressed Sydneysider posted photos of the rental to social media.

‘Just went and had a look at the house that is ready to be moved into,’ they wrote.

‘This is what I came across. There was also a room converted into a hair salon with clippers and hair everywhere.’

Internet users were quick to agree the property wasn’t worth $700 a week.

‘So basically they want you to clean the property they are meant to have reasonably clean and free from mould before renting it out,’ one person wrote.

They also want you to dispose of all the junk/sh*t that someone has left behind or leave it there and then you can’t use the space.

‘And for that, you get to pay $700 per week. Pass.’

‘Wow that’s awful and landlords are just blatantly taking advantage of desperate tenants seeking a property,’ another added.

‘Just shows total disrespect for rental tenants.’

A third simply stated: ‘That’s disgusting.’

It comes as a tiny shack ‘barely wider than a two seater couch’ was advertised for $175 per week near Cygnet in Tasmania.

The property didn’t have a bathroom and was located half an hour out of the small town which has little public transport.

Furious renters slammed the exorbitant listing for the subpar home as a ‘disgrace’.

‘This tiny wooden box is barely wider than a two seater couch, has no bathroom, no kitchen, and is a 25 minute walk from Cygnet,’ one commenter wrote.

‘If you had tried that on as little as five years ago, someone would have tossed you directly into the Tasman Sea.’
