Stephen A Smith’s brother Basil lost his life in 1992 in a car accident. Amongst the six Smith siblings, Basil was the youngest of them all.

The sports reporter shared the heartbreaking story of his brother’s passing, and it’s unfortunate that amongst all the other 15 passengers, he was the only one to lose his life.

Basil, a traveling salesman, was returning from work in a passenger van filled with fifteen other people. Stephen and the others survived as they were awake and braced themselves for the impact.

Unlike the other passengers, his brother Basil was fast asleep. Basil got thrown off the vehicle and was immediately killed.

On Sunday morning, Stephen got the dreadful news about his brother’s demise. Every Sunday morning, Stephen, Basil, and his oldest sister, Linda, would phone each other for their NFL picks.

And Stephen, who at the time was unknown about his brother’s demise, cheerfully called his sister. But what he heard from Linda left the commentator pacing in his apartment room.

After 45 minutes of his first telephone call with his sister Linda, she telephoned him about his brother Basil’s demise. Stephen is his mother’s only living son after what happened with Basil.

Stephen A Smith was born to parents in 1967 in a household of five siblings. Stephen’s mother, Janet Smith, who passed away in 2017, remains Stephens’s biggest inspiration.

Linda Smith was a woman of West-Indian descent and once said to Smith that he came out of her womb talking. That might not be true, but it perfectly suits Stephen’s personality.

On ESPN, before Udoka’s suspension was announced, Stephen said that he was praying for the Celtic head coach to survive from suspension.

Stephen said, “He is a sensational basketball coach, and in his first year as head coach for Boston Celtic, he got them into NBA finals.

But he did criticize Udoka as well and said this is the stupidest position the Celtic coach put himself at.

Stephen A Smith is originally from Bronx, New York, and was raised in the Hollis section of Queens. Within his first two years with ESPN, Stephen A Smith became one of its most renowned African-American commentators.
