Update on Case: Brandon Tobin Arrested for Killing His 82-Year-Old Grandmother

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) hasn’t said much about Brandon Tobin’s case. They haven’t told anyone that they think he might have done something wrong because he hasn’t been charged with his grandmother’s death yet.

The investigators are waiting for the RCMP forensic laboratory to send back a few vials containing the suspect’s blood samples. At around 11 pm on March 16, 2022, the medical team was called to Brake’s home on Mitchell Court near Elizabeth Avenue. When the medical team got to the house they found that the person had already died. The RNC said that it was a homicide but they didn’t give any more information about it.

The RNC arrested Brandon Tobin the day after the incident and took him to the Health Sciences Centre for medical treatment where they drew his blood. Later the police got permission to take the four vials of blood from the hospital. The police looked around the house and took towels with red stains and swabs from doors walls and stairs. They sent these items to Ottawa for forensic analysis.

On February 24 2023 a document was filed in court. It said that the RCMP lab had been holding onto the items for 322 days and as of that date the RNC hadn’t received the results of the blood analysis.

Brandon Tobin is in big trouble and is now in jail for something very serious related to a murder investigation. He is being kept in a federal prison called Springhill Institution which is in Nova Scotia. He has had some trouble with the law in the past. In December 2014 he was sentenced to four years in prison for attacking someone with a baseball bat.

At first, people thought Brandon tried to kill someone but later he admitted to hurting them badly which is still very serious. When the police searched for clues at Brake’s house they found a bag with cocaine inside as per official papers. The police searched the place where Brandon Tobin was living and found many illegal things. They took away drug equipment guns and bullets and a very big amount of cocaine (more than 1 pound).

RCMP Reports That Turnaround Times Vary

RCMP told CBS News that the National Forensic Laboratory Services didn’t give any information about a specific investigation to keep it honest and trustworthy.

Cpl. Kim Chamberland who speaks for the RCMP said that the time needed to finish an investigation can vary based on many things. Some examples are the kind of investigation how many requests there are and how many people can work at the lab. Chamberland sent an email explaining that sometimes the police may ask for more services after they’ve already asked for some services.

The RCMP runs three labs in Canada: one in Ottawa one in Edmonton and one in Surrey British Columbia. These labs help with investigations in most provinces but not Quebec and Ontario.
