Alan Shearer has just made a claim about Chelsea and England attacker Cole Palmer that the player surely won’t like hearing.
The last nine months has gone pretty much perfectly for Cole Palmer, 22, since he left Manchester City and joined Chelsea.
He’s rightfully at this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament with England fresh off the stunning debut season for the Blues. The young attacker scored 25 goals in just 45 matches for Chelsea.
However, Palmer’s momentum hasn’t spilled over into the summer yet. He’s been an unused substitute in the opening two England games of the Euros.

Alan Shearer has said that Chelsea’s Palmer could find himself in a position where he plays no football at Euro 2024. It’s quite a big claim when you consider we’re talking about the Premier League Young Player of the Season whose form was outrageous last season.
When asked how England fit Palmer into the team, Shearer responded: “He must be sat there thinking what have I got to do to get in.
“I know they won their first [match], 35 minutes they were good, the rest they weren’t so good. They weren’t great at all against Denmark the whole game, even when they went 1-0 up.
“He must be sat there thinking what have I got to do to even get half an hour in this team. It’s exactly the same with Anthony Gordon.
“… One little spark and one good performance you just never know. If that happens, he may not play a part Cole Palmer. I think it all depends how the games go.
“I don’t suspect he’ll (Gareth Southgate) make wholesale changes. He’ll make one, maybe two at most. I’d be surprised if Cole Palmer was in the XI.”
Chelsea teammate is a bit luckier
While Chelsea fans must be frustrated that Palmer isn’t getting a look-in with England, there may be a small reason to cheer.
The Athletic claims that Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is set to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in England’s starting line-up against Slovenia on Tuesday night.
It’s the final match of the group stages, so a great opportunity to get into the XI for the knockout rounds.
Let’s hope that Gallagher, 24, can perform well like he has for his club all season.
As for Palmer, if he doesn’t get any minutes versus Slovenia, we’ll be worried that he’ll be overlooked all tournament. If that happens, we’d be shocked and bitterly disappointed.
