David Seaman believes that the signing of David Raya will prove to be good news for Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal.
The Gunners are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department and have the Brentford shot-stopper in their sights.
While a deal hasn’t yet been agreed, the Bees have made it clear that it will take an offer of £40million to get the signing over the line.
With Matt Turner on the cusp of a move to Nottingham Forest, the arrival of Raya will provide stern competition for current Arsenal number one, Ramsdale going into the new season.
The England goalkeeper has been one of the Premier League’s best in recent seasons, but could have his spot taken from him if Raya impresses upon his arrival.
But while Ramsdale may be wary of the added competition for his place in the team, Arsenal legend Seaman believes that the battle for the starting jersey will make Ramsdale a better player.
Speaking to talkSPORT Breakfast, Seaman said: “The only way I can compare this is when Arsenal signed Richard Wright when I was number one.
“They paid a lot of money for him – I say a lot of money, it was £6million which doesn’t sound like much these days!
“But honestly, it made me a better goalkeeper and I’m sure that’s what will happen with Aaron.
“You know, you get a chance in training to show what you can do and what sort of standards you’ve got to get to and I’m sure that that’s what Aaron will do.
“I’m in no doubt that Aaron will take this competition on and like I say, he’ll show what he can do and it will definitely make him a better goalkeeper.”
