Chelsea will not be signing one player who they have been recently linked with in the summer.

Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel was a striker who Chelsea were considering, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

However, Tel has now signed a new contract at Bayern, with Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg claiming that the club’s sporting director Christoph Freund played a huge role in convincing the 18-year-old to stay.

Chelsea will now have to look elsewhere, though the Blues signing Tel always looked unlikely.

Tel, who has actually spent most of the season playing on the left, is still an inexperienced forward. With this young Chelsea team struggling, especially in front of goal at times, you would expect them to sign a more proven No.9.

Mathys Tel never a priority for Chelsea

While Chelsea may have had an interest in Tel, the Frenchman was never a priority for the club.

Again, going into next season, the Blues know that they need an experienced striker who is guaranteed to score goals for them.

Mauricio Pochettino already has Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja, who are both 22 and are not the most prolific No.9s yet.

Jackson has scored 11 goals this season, which is not terrible, but even the Senegal international has admitted that he can do better. Eleventh in the Premier League table, Chelsea need better if they are to become a Champions League team again.

At 18 and still trying to make a real name for himself at Bayern, Tel would not have represented an upgrade on Jackson, at least not straight away.

What Chelsea need, then, is someone like Victor Osimhen, who scored 31 goals in all competitions last season.

The problem is every top club needs someone like the Nigerian, which is why the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain also look set to make a move for him in the summer.
