David Raya’s recent comments about his career ambitions have left fans unconvinced he’ll move to Tottenham.

The Brentford goalkeeper has been targeted by Spurs as a replacement for long-standing shot-stopper Hugo Lloris, with Manchester United also interested.

According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Bees star has agreed personal terms with the north London outfit already.

However despite his deal expiring next summer, no club has come in with Brentford’s desired offer of £40million.

But fans are now joking that it’s not just Raya’s price tag that could get in the way of him becoming a Spurs player, thanks to his comments in his latest interview.

Speaking to The Times about his future, Raya said: “I will always feel close to [Brentford]. Being part of the promotion to the Premier League is something I will never forget.

“I know there are rumours about me leaving. There are some options for me to go but obviously Brentford are asking for a lot of money. That could make clubs not want to buy me, it could make them look somewhere else.

“But if that’s the value they give me then it’s up to them. I have a year left on my contract and until then I’m a Brentford player, there’s nothing I can do.”

But despite making it clear the Bees hold the power over his future, it was what Raya said next that’s left fans most confused.

“I have ambitions to make the next step in my career. I want to try to win titles and to compete in Europe in the next couple of years.

“I’m 27 now and I feel like I’m at the point in my career when I want to make that step up. There are options out there but it’s not just my ambitions, the club also needs to let me go.”

In response to Raya’s comment about wanting to win titles and play in Europe, one fan wrote on Twitter: “Win titles with Tottenham?”

“Titles and Tottenham don’t go together though,” another said.

Meanwhile one other joked: “And that, ladies and gentleman, is how you come up with an oxymoron.”

Fans are of course referring to the fact Tottenham finished outside of the European spots this season, ending up in eight place.

They are also alluding to Spurs not winning a trophy since their League Cup victory in 2008, meaning Raya’s ambitions of winning titles and playing European football certainly isn’t guaranteed at Spurs.

The Bees star on the other hand does have the credentials of a winner.

The Spaniard finished with the highest save percentage of any goalkeeper in the league, whilst also finishing first for long passes completed per match.

Ange Postecoglou will be hoping he bring some of that table topping ability to Spurs should he get his man.
