Edwin van der Sar has told fans he is now out of intensive care after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

The Manchester United legend was put in intensive care after falling ill at restaurant on holiday on the Croatian island of Hvar earlier this month.

Van der Sar was then taken to the coastal town of Split on the mainland before Ajax, where he recently resigned as director, said he was in a stable condition.

His wife Annemarie then updated fans to say that he was communicative and stable, although in intensive care.

However, the former goalkeeper appears to thankfully be on the mend as he posted an update on Twitter.

Accompanied with a picture of him in a hospital bed alongside his wife, he said: “First of all, we want to thank everyone for all the great and supportive messages.

“I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit. However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!”

Van der Sar is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers to ever grace the Premier League.

He began his professional career at Dutch giants Ajax, playing there for nine seasons and winning four league titles.

The now 52-year-old then signed for Juventus, although he only spent two years in Turin.

In 2001, he made his way to English football after completing a switch to Fulham, spending four seasons at Craven Cottage.

United came calling in 2005 and he made 266 appearances for the Red Devils, keeping 135 clean sheets.

He boasts four Premier League titles and a Champions League winners’ medal to his name at Old Trafford.

He retired from the game in 2011 was most recently the CEO at Ajax after starting in the role in 2016.
