Kylian Mbappe reportedly telling Paris Saint-Germain he won’t be extending his contract until 2025 could have a major effect on Harry Kane’s career trajectory.

The departure of Mbappe’s France teammate Karim Benzema has left Real Madrid in need of a striker to lead their line, with Kane among those to be linked with a move this summer.

However, the bombshell Mbappe news has potentially scuppered any chance of Tottenham and England star Kane joining the Spanish giants.

French outlet L’Equipe reports Mbappe has informed his club that he will not be willing to extend his contract with the club until the summer of 2025.

This means PSG stand to lose their prized asset on a free transfer next summer, meaning the upcoming transfer window is their only realistic hope of getting cash for him.

One way or another Mbappe, Real Madrid and PSG would benefit should the move happen, but it would be a ‘disaster’ for Kane, says talkSPORT’s Rory Jennings.

Reacting to the news, Jennings said on The Transfer Insiders: “I know what’s going to happen here [Mbappe joins Real Madrid]. And that means Harry Kane either stays at Tottenham or goes to Manchester United. A domino effect.”

Jennings added: “This is a disaster for Harry Kane… from Harry Kane’s perspective I think this is a disaster. I think he needed to go to Real Madrid, he needed to do the selfish thing, get to Real Madrid.”

It’s been suggested that Kane’s determination to surpass Alan Shearer as the Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer means Kane wouldn’t entertain a move abroad anyway, however, Jennings has worked out a way the 29-year-old could enjoy the best of both worlds.

Jennings added: “I worked out a system where he could still get Alan Shearer’s record of 260 Premier League goals.

“He’s 47 goals short, this is what he needs to do… go to Real Madrid and take the difficult move. The easiest thing would be to stay at Tottenham and the second easiest would be to go to Manchester United.

“But he should do the hardest thing and go to Spain, lead the line for Real Madrid, link up with that new Real Madrid team. Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Jude Bellingham at the new look Bernabeu, go and be the main man there.

“You know what they’re like, win a couple of Champions Leagues, a couple of LaLigas and then at 33 or 34 years old come back like Teddy Sheringham did.

“He comes back, he scores 47 goals in his final two or three years and breaks the record.”
