Harry Maguire will reportedly be axed as Manchester United’s captain in the coming week – even if he remains at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old centre-back has been linked with a move away from the Theatre of Dreams after falling down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.

He started just eight Premier League games last season, with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and even left-back Luke Shaw preferred instead.

Bruno Fernandes deputised in the England international’s absence, with the pair lifting the Carabao Cup together after the final triumph over Newcastle.

And according to The Sun, Fernandes is set to be named as United’s skipper on a full-time basis.

It has been said that Ten Hag will speak to his squad in the next few days to ask for their view on the potential appointment.

The decision has been made regardless of whether Maguire, who has two years left to run on his deal, is offloaded or not.

Newcastle and Aston Villa have been linked with a move for the ex-Leicester star, while Chelsea have also been credited with an interest.

Reports have claimed that United must pay Maguire £10m if they choose to terminate his contract this summer.

Maguire could be a second high-profile departure at Old Trafford, with David de Gea leaving following the expiration of his contract to end his 12-year spell.

And Fernandes didn’t take the news well, as he took to social media on Saturday to state that the Spaniard deserved a better send-off.

In an Instagram statement, the Portuguese playmaker wrote: “You deserved to say goodbye at the stadium with all the fans cheering you for all the beautiful memories.
