Chelsea could have the chance to sign one player from Real Madrid in the summer.
Real Madrid are planning on offloading Ferland Mendy as they look to bring in Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, according to The Athletic.
Last month, journalist Simon Phillips claimed that the left-back’s name had been discussed at Stamford Bridge.
With Ben Chilwell’s injury record a concern and Ian Maatsen possibly leaving Chelsea permanently in the summer, the club may need to sign a new left-back.
Maatsen has a £35m release clause in his contract, a report from The Telegraph claimed in January.
Real Madrid looking to sell Ferland Mendy
Real Madrid trying to get rid of Mendy could provide Chelsea with a good opportunity here.
The Blues probably could do with a new left-back, with central defender Levi Colwill spending most of the season there so far, and Mendy is certainly a talented one.
MORE CHELSEA STORIES
The Frenchman, who cost Real Madrid £47m (BBC Sport) when he joined from Lyon back in 2019, can carry the ball.
For example, he completed 1.7 dribbles per league game during the 2020/21 season, which was the highest average in his squad (WhoScored).
Ultimately, if Chelsea do want to sign another player for the left side of their defence in the next transfer window, we do not think Mendy would be a bad name to consider. The only real issue with him is his injury record and with that already being a problem with Chilwell, there is a bit of a risk here.
However, if Mauricio Pochettino and the club can look past that, perhaps the France international will become a serious target for them in the summer.
Chelsea still have Marc Cucurella on their books as well, but he is currently sidelined. Injuries really have been the story of the Blues’ season.
