Chelsea’s midfield area is certainly stacked right now when you see the amount of different options available in the squad.
Blues head coach Enzo Maresca could have some difficult decisions to make when selecting his midfield set-up next season.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall completed his move from Leicester City to Chelsea this week. He’s a box-to-box central midfielder that thrived under Maresca’s management at the King Power Stadium last season.
On paper, you could compare him to Blues and England midfielder Conor Gallagher, whose future is a hot topic for discussion in the transfer rumour mill.

How Chelsea think Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Conor Gallagher are different
According to The Athletic, Chelsea feel like Gallagher is a midfielder who’s more defensive and box-to-box than Dewsbury-Hall.
It is understood that the Blues haven’t ruled out offering Gallagher a new deal despite speculation about him leaving.
Dewsbury-Hall is considered to be more of an attacking midfielder, thriving in the No 8 position at Leicester last year as someone with a licence to get very high up the pitch.
In terms of Gallagher, if he stays, he’s more likely to fill a role like Wilfred Ndidi did at Leicester as a conventional box-to-box No 8.
It sounds like there’d be no problem for Maresca fitting the Englishmen in the same midfield system, but will they both be at the club next season?
On top of that, don’t forget that midfield stars such as Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia will surely expect to play regularly in the XI.
Goals from midfield
Based on last season, Chelsea could do with some more goals from the centre of the park.
Dewsbury-Hall scored 12 goals and made 15 assists last season for Leicester. In theory, he should add some extra firepower as an attacking threat from midfield.
Here is a list of Chelsea’s top scorers across all competitions in the 2023/24 campaign:
- Cole Palmer – 25 goals
- Nicolas Jackson – 17 goals
- Raheem Sterling – 10 goals
- Noni Madueke – 7 goals
- Conor Gallagher – 7 goals
- Enzo Fernandez – 7 goals
- Mykhailo Mudryk – 7 goals
