Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has hinted at a potential swap deal with Levi Colwill to help Chelsea sign Moises Caicedo.
However, the Italian has left fans puzzled after saying he’d like to have both players at the Seagulls next season.
Colwill has returned to Chelsea for pre-season off the back of a hugely impressive loan spell at Brighton.
Given how well he did on the south coast, talkSPORT reported earlier in July that they want to sign him on a permanent deal.
However, Chelsea want to keep the centre-back and have offered him a new long-term deal at the club.
The Blues are also interested in signing Brighton’s Moises Caicedo but have so far fallen short of his £100million valuation.
Both clubs look set to engage in further negotiations in the weeks to come, but it appears that De Zerbi has a solution.
Speaking ahead of their Premier League Summer Series friendly early on Sunday morning, he said: “There are two questions. Not only about Caicedo, also about Colwill, and maybe it can be [a swap].”
However, he also said: “I would like to play with Caicedo and Colwill together but at the moment I can only speak about Caicedo as Colwill is not one of my players.”
His comments appeared confusing, with one fan on Twitter saying: “How does that make any sense…”
“How the hell would that work? We offer Colwill to get Caicedo. So how the f*** would they play together?”, added another.
A third said: “Then he should come be assistant coach in Chelsea to play with them together.”
It remains to be seen if Chelsea will be able to get hold of Caicedo this summer to join Enzo Fernandez in the midfield.
However, with Wesley Fofana likely out of action for months due to surgery on his ACL, Colwill will be an even more prized asset.
Chelsea and Brighton meet in Philadelphia for a pre-season clash at 12am Sunday morning UK time.
Colwill could be set to feature for the Blues, but De Zerbi revealed that Caicedo will not play as he has only just returned to training.
