‘I’m so proud of him!’ Emmerdale fans delighted as teen Marshall stands up to his enraged homophobic father Colin as he attempts to force him to ‘find God’ and ‘not live a life of sin’

Emmerdale fans were delighted during Friday’s episode when Marshall Hamston stood up to his furious homophobic father Colin.

Teen Marshall (Max Fletcher) was disowned, and emotionally and physically abused by parent Colin (Mark Noble) over his sexuality, when he came out as gay.

Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) came to learn of how Colin had treated Marshall when she spotted Marshall’s bruised arms, and she took the youngster in to live with her and Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson).

On the anniversary of his mother’s death, a boozed-up Marshall left his father Colin a heartfelt voice note, only for it to go completely ignored by Colin.

When Marshall was hospitalised with alcohol poisoning, his father turned up at the hospital, desperate to know if his son was alright, but he instead preached a religious message as a cover for his bigotry, insisting Marshall’s brush with death was a sign from God that he should live a ‘clean’ life and not act on his attraction to the same sex.

Seething: He told a furious Colin he 'had to keep' his sexuality 'hidden' for a long time, something he was not willing to continue doing, leaving Colin furious

Marshall came to the realisation that his father was not going to change, and when Colin arrived at Mulberry Cottage hoping his message had encouraged his son to change his ways, he was in for a shock when Marshall bravely exclaimed: ‘I’m gay,’ once again.

He told a furious Colin he ‘had to keep’ his sexuality ‘hidden’ for a long time, something he was not willing to continue doing.

Colin blamed Laurel who hit back, telling him he should be ‘ashamed’ of himself.

Viewers took to Twitter to express their delight at Marshall standing up for himself, while condemning Colin for his treatment of his son.

One person wrote: ‘I’m so proud of Marshall for standing up to his bigot father once and for all. Well done Marshall you’re so brave.’

Someone else wrote: ‘Well said Marshall! I’m proud of him. His dad has shown his bigoted ways & true colours.’
