Harry Potter fans shocked as subtitles reveal what his cousin Dudley REALLY said to wizard during an iconic scene

Harry Potter fans have been left bamboozled after learning an iconic scene from the first ever film may not be quite as it seems.

A clip from the start of 2001’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when viewers are first introduced to the young wizard has resurfaced on social media.

In the TikTok video, Harry’s cousin Dudley Dursley is seen running up and down the stairs and stomping his feet at their home in Privet Drive in an effort to try and wake-up Harry who has been shut in the cupboard under the stairs by his muggle Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia.

As Dudley dashes up and down the stairs, many viewers previously thought he was shouting: ‘Wake up, Potter!’

However, the subtitle claims he’s actually shouting: ‘Wake up, cousin!’

Taking to the comments section of the TikTok post, Potter fans expressed their confusion over the clip.

One person remarked: ‘It’s Potter. Ain’t no way Dudley called him cousin… cousin would imply Dudley claims him as family not as his live-in whipping boy.’

Someone else wrote: ‘I hear Potter. I don’t know why in the subtitle said cousin.’

While someone else commented: ‘It was always cousin,’ another person wrote: ‘I can hear both.’

Debate: Fans were left confused after watching the clip, with some saying Dudley had always said 'cousin', while others said they could hear both 'cousin' and 'Potter'

‘If you think Potter you hear Potter, if you think cousin you hear cousin,’ posted another person.

While someone else commented: ‘I think it’s “cousin” ’cause also in the Italian translation it says cousin.’

One other person claimed: ‘Captions are from script so this was improv or something.’

It comes after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed the company would like to make further Harry Potter sequels – with the blessing of author J.K. Rowling.

The 62-year-old made the claim during an investors’ call on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter, despite backlash over Rowling’s tweets from June 2020 in which she ridiculed an article’s description of women as ‘people who menstruate’.

David reportedly said during the meeting: ‘We haven’t had a Superman movie in 13 years. We haven’t done a Harry Potter in 15 years. The DC movies and the Harry Potter movies provided a lot of the profits for Warner Bros… over the past 25 years.’

Despite his alleged claims, the final Harry Potter film hit cinemas 11 years ago while Superman adaptation Man of Steel was released in 2013.

But it was then that he’s thought to have said of a Potter sequel, ‘If we can do something with JK going forward…’
