• Adam Andrews showed ‘absolutely no remorse’, Ipswich Crown Court heard

A thug who shook a baby boy so hard he was left completely paralysed, blind and suffering up to 40 seizures a day has been jailed for three years.

Adam Andrews, 37, had shown ‘absolutely no remorse’ since inflicting the injuries on the 21-day-old baby on June 28, 2018, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

In a moving victim impact statement, the mother of the boy, who is now aged five, said he was blind and paralysed, and would never be able to walk or talk.

She added: ‘His bedroom is not filled with toys but with feed machines and medical equipment.

‘He will never be able to have food or water and has to be fed by a button attached to his bowel.’

The mother added her son required 24-hour care, and suffered between 30 and 40 seizures a day.

She said: ‘I have to watch my child deteriorate for what this man has done in a burst of outrage of anger.

‘He should not be allowed to walk the streets while I care for my child around the clock.

‘I have to accept it’s very likely I’m going to outlive my child. When I fall asleep every night my biggest fear is [he] will not wake up with me.’

Andrews of Raynsford Road, Great Whelnetham, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, was previously found not guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent against the child at a trial in 2022.

But he was convicted of a lesser charge of grievous bodily harm without intent.

Prosecutor Steven Perian KC said Andrews had shown ‘absolutely no remorse’ since the incident more than four years ago.

William Carter, defending, said the shaking likely happened over just a few seconds and that ‘this was a spontaneous loss of control’.

Judge David Pugh said it was clear that the boy’s injuries were inflicted by Andrews’ ‘violent shaking’ of him.

The judge told him: ‘Precisely what happened later that night and why, only you will know.’

There were claps from the public gallery as the mother finished reading her statement, but Andrews did not react to the speech or his sentence.

He is believed to have worked for a housing association at the time of the assault.

The court heard how the baby was initially taken to West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, with a serious head injury before being transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.
