Marcus Rashford was guilty of a social media clanger when posting a goodbye message to ex-Manchester United teammate David de Gea.

The Spanish goalkeeper announced his Old Trafford exit on Saturday having failed to agree terms on a new deal.

De Gea, who was the Red Devils’ No.1 for more than a decade, had become a free agent at the start of the month.

There was hope from the 32-year-old that an agreement could be thrashed out, but United are now looking at finding his replacement – with Inter Milan’s Andre Onana eyed up.

Bruno Fernandes was quick to pay tribute to the United legend, as he stressed that the 2013 Premier League champion deserved a better send-off.

And versatile forward Rashford also shared his thoughts on De Gea’s exit, but he was left red-faced after making a rookie error – which was quickly altered.

The England international’s initial upload appeared to show him asking a member of his team who manages his account to make the Instagram post on his behalf.

An image on Rashford’s account saw him embracing De Gea, with the caption reading: “Caption ideas: You were here from my breakthrough, good luck with your next step brother.”

After being spotted by a number of fans, the first two words of the post were swiftly removed.

Though plenty of users were quick to take a screenshot of the original post where they shared it online.

And while De Gea failed to sign a new deal at the Theatre of Dreams, all signs point towards Rashford penning fresh terms beyond 2024.

It has been reported that he is in line to become United’s highest-paid player where he will pocket a whopping £375,000-per-week.
