At about 6pm, NSW police were alerted by Queensland police that a truck carrying an allegedly stolen bobcat had crossed the border at Boggabilla and was driving south along the Newell Highway.
A Queensland Police officer, 27, was injured when his car was allegedly rammed at Millmerran.
He was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.
Over the border, NSW Police tried to stop the truck about 100km north of Moree, but the driver allegedly ignored them and kept going.
Police claim the truck “frequently” crossed to the wrong side of the highway.
Road spikes were laid 10km north of Moree and deflated one front tyre, but the driver continued south.
A NSW Police truck was clipped by the pursued truck south of Moree, rendering it unusable.
Police claim the truck drove on the wrong side of the highway for about 10km before it hit a power pole, snapping it and knocking the bobcat from the tray back.
The broken power pole also brought down power lines.
Police claim the truck drove away from the scene, leaving the bobcat behind, and that it continued to swerve into oncoming traffic, forcing “dozens” of vehicles to pull off the highway.
It eventually halted south of Gurley, about 30km from Moree, with one front wheel ground down to the hub.
A 24-year-old Quirindi man was arrested and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
He remains there under police guard.
Police allege the bobcat was reported stolen from Boonah showground in Queensland yesterday morning.
