The news of Darren Moore’s departure as manager of Sheffield Wednesday surprised many people following their thrilling play-off success last season.

The Owls, under Moore, overturned a 4-0 first leg deficit against Peterborough in the semi finals of penalties, before defeating South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley in the final via a 123rd minute winner in extra time.

Sheffield Wednesday will be back in the Championship next season after two seasons in League One, and are on the hunt for a new manager following Moore’s departure by mutual consent.

Liverpool legend Gerrard has been without a managerial job since he was sacked as manager of Aston Villa in October last year, and rumours suggest he could be tempted by the Hillsborough job.

The 43-year-old enjoyed success in his first managerial role at Rangers, delivering the club their first league title 10 years when he lifted the trophy in 2021.

Sheffield Wednesday Next Manager Odds (talkSPORT BET)

  • Steven Gerrard – 6/4
  • Carlos Carvalhal – 2/1

  • Steve Cotterill – 16/1
  • Michael Duff – 16/1
  • Gary O’Neil – 16/1
  • Giuseppe Lachini – 20/1

The Portuguese took the club to two Championship play-off finals in three years, and even had a stint in the Premier League as manager of Swansea for the second half of the 2017-18 season.

The 57-year-old most recently managed in La Liga as the boss of Celta Vigo, taking over in November last year with the club locked in a relegation battle, before securing a 13th place finish with a win over champions Barcelona on the final day of the season.

Carvalhal’s compatriot Vitor Campelos is also on the shortlist at 5/2 to take over at Hillsborough.

The 48-year-old has recently left his role as manager of Portuguese side Chaves, with whom he achieved promotion to the top flight in his first full season and then guided the club to a 7th place finish in their first season back in the Primeira Liga.

Current Darmstadt manager Torsten Lieberknecht is also in the running at 4/1, just ahead of former Wolves manager Bruno Lage at 5/1.

Lieberknecht has just earned promotion to the Bundesliga with the German side in his second season in charge of the club.

Former Southampton boss Nathan Jones is slightly further behind at 8/1.
