Erik ten Hag has told Harry Maguire he does not want him to leave Manchester United despite stripping him of the captain’s armband.
Relations between manager Ten Hag and his former skipper are amicable despite Maguire’s bombshell social media announcement earlier this week.
Maguire is attracting interest from West Ham and a number of other Premier League sides, as well as teams in Italy.
However, talkSPORT has been told the England star remains relaxed about his future.
The centre-back, still the world’s most expensive defender at £80m, will make a final decision on whether to leave or stay and fight for his place in the coming weeks.
Maguire is aware this is a big season for him ahead of the upcoming European Championship in Germany.
Tino time
Newcastle will revisit their interest in Southampton defender Tino Livramento after sealing the capture of Harvey Barnes.
Barnes is close to completing a move from Leicester to St James’ Park after the two clubs agreed a fee worth more than £35m.
The swoop for Barnes is being partially financed by Allan Saint-Maximin’s pending move to Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli.
But Eddie Howe is still looking to strengthen in the full back areas, with 20-year-old Livramento a priority target.
Newcastle were quoted £50m when they approached Southampton over Livramento earlier in the summer, and are hoping that price reduces dramatically nearer the end of the transfer window.
Silva fight
Manchester City are prepared to fight to stop Bernardo Silva becoming the latest big-name departure from the Etihad.
Silva is wanted by European giants Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, and as previously reported in this notebook is open to a move away from City.
But having already lost treble-winning captain Ilkay Gundogan to Barca, and having agreed to sell Riyad Mahrez to Saudi Arabia, Pep Guardiola is keen to hang onto Silva.
The Portuguese magician, winner of five Premier League titles, is out of contract in 2025 and the ideal scenario for City is that he signs an extension.
Failing that, the European champions will demand a transfer fee of at least £70m to try and ward off potential suitors.
Palhinha rejected
Chelsea have rejected the chance to try and sign Fulham’s Joao Palhinha – because he is too old.
talkSPORT understands the Blues’ were presented with Palhinha as a possible alternative to top target Moises Caicedo.
But having recently turned 28, the former Sporting Lisbon ace does not match the age profile of Chelsea’s recruitment team.
The average age of Chelsea’s starting eleven for Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in charge, the 5-0 friendly win over Wrexham, was less than 21.
Meanwhile keep your eyes peeled for a fresh offer from West Ham for Palhinha after their initial offer of £40m was rejected by their London neighbours.
